Police say group restrained three victims and tried to take child from home.
Unified police have arrested five adults and a juvenile on Saturday for their suspected roles in an aggravated robbery in Salt Lake County.
Police say that four of the people tied up several people in a Kearns home, robbed them and tried to take a child from the home early Saturday morning. A fifth person “just kind of hung out” while the sixth was the getaway driver, said Lt. Justin Hoyal.
Police tracked the group’s car to a West Valley City home, where they were arrested.
The groundwork for the crime apparently began several months ago, when a 27-year-old man at the home who runs “an auto club-type business” started talking with a woman over Facebook, Hoyal said. The two arranged to meet at the man’s house, near 4900 South and 4100 West, to discuss the woman joining the business.
But after she arrived about 1 a.m. Saturday, three males also went into the house and forced the businessman downstairs, Hoyal said. One of them had a handgun, he added.
The man’s sister and her boyfriend were also in the basement, so the assailants zip-tied all three and proceeded to steal computers, cash and cellphones, Hoyal said. A 4-year-old saw what was happening, and the assailants tried to take the child, too, Hoyal said.
But another person in the house who had been sleeping upstairs woke up and “basically startled” the assailants, who took off in a Nissan Altima, Hoyal added.
Unified police arrived shortly after the group left and alerted other officers to look for the Altima. A West Valley City officer saw the vehicle and followed it to a home near 4400 South and 4800 West, Hoyal said.
Unified and West Valley City police set up containment around the home, at which point several people and three small children came out.
“We spent the morning investigating and interviewing those people … and identified six people responsible for this robbery,” Hoyal said. Officers also searched the home and found the stolen property, he said.
