An off-duty Beverly Hills police officer was arrested last week on suspicion of driving under the influence after crashing his truck into a home and power poll in Simi Valley. According to reports, after the officer struck the home, he flipped the car upside down on a retaining wall. When the Simi Valley Police Department arrived at the scene, bystanders had already helped the officer, 42-year-old Jeffrey Sweet, out of his vehicle. He was treated at the hospital and released.
Fortunately, no one was injured in the crash, though the situation had the potential for disaster. According to police reports, Sweet’s car struck a gas service line to a house during the crash. Firefighters evacuated two homes as they closed the line. The road was closed to allow cleanup crews to clear debris and repair multiple damaged power poles.
For a first DUI, drivers in California face a four-month suspension of driving privileges. Drivers who refuse to submit to a chemical test at the time of arrest, however, face a one-year suspension. No matter what, a DUI conviction has serious consequences.
