U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents arrested a 71-year-old man at his Los Angeles apartment Wednesday. Federal officials claim that the discovered 40,000 fake erectile-dysfunction pills in the man’s belongings when agents searched through his golf bad and luggage at Los Angeles International airport. Most Californians are aware that items are frequently searched at LAX. Federal agents say that the man returned to L.A. from a trip to Korea when agents discovered the alleged fake Viagra, Cialis and Levitra pills February 28. The feds claim that nearly 30,000 counterfeit Viagra tablets, nearly 9,000 fake Cialis pills and 793 counterfeit Levitra pills were all in aluminum-foil-wrapped packets. Federal authorities took the man into custody on Wednesday on serious charges. The alleged fake prescription drug smuggling case is reportedly being pursued on charges of trafficking in counterfeit goods. Prosecutors claim that analysis of the pills that agents seized at LAX indicate that the ingredients in the alleged fake ED pills do not match the ingredients found in Cialis, Viagra or Levitra. Federal agents claim that the man said that the pills were not intended for his personal use. The criminal complaint reportedly says that the L.A. man has a heart condition and that he admitted that if he used all 40,000 of the pills personally, it would kill him. While the story seems to be quickly sweeping across the country-making news headlines-the allegations remain just claims that a potential trafficking offense occurred. The few details released in media reports have most likely been generated from federal reports intended to suggest guilt. The man has the right to fight the state’s allegations in federal court. The Associated Press reports that the man appeared in federal court in Los Angeles Wednesday and a preliminary hearing was scheduled for March 28 in the trafficking case. The Los Angeles resident was reportedly released from custody on a $10,000 bond.
