With the summer season heading toward the Labor Day holiday, many law enforcement agencies in and around the Los Angeles area are ramping up DUI enforcement through the use of DUI checkpoints and saturation patrols. Murrieta Police set up a DUI checkpoint Friday night. Law enforcement says a man who tried to avoid the sobriety checkpoint was later arrested on a number of serious charges, including a DUI charge.

Police claim the 35-year-old Lake Elsinore man attempted to make a U-turn to avoid the DUI checkpoint. An officer reportedly approached the man’s car. The officer alleges the driver “displayed objective symptoms of being under the influence of drugs.” Law enforcement claims the driver admitted he was in possession of marijuana.

Murrieta Police reportedly escorted the man away from his vehicle to conduct a further investigation. However, police say the driver attempted to flee on foot. An officer physically detained the Lake Elsinore resident until a second officer arrived with a Taser, which was used to further subdue the accused man.

Police brought the man to a local hospital for treatment after the encounter. Police also conducted a search of the man’s vehicle. Law enforcement says they seized marijuana and a gun during the vehicle search.

When the man was discharged from the hospital, Murrieta Police placed him under arrest on numerous charges. The man is accused of resisting an officer, unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon, carrying a loaded firearm and driving under the influence of drugs.

During the entire six-hour checkpoint operation, police made two arrests. In addition to the lake Elsinore man, police arrested a 50-year-old San Diego man who reportedly was taken into custody on an outstanding warrant and for carrying an illegal knife, not on suspicion of DUI.

More than 1,000 vehicles passed through the checkpoint, with more than 650 of the cars being chosen for investigation. Only 15 drivers were chosen for further investigation for suspicion of DUI. The two men arrested were booked into the Southwest Detention Center in Murrieta.
