He’s not a household name by any means, but he might be on his way to becoming one. Known primarily at this point in his career as Christina Aguilera’s boyfriend, Matthew Rutler made news early this morning by being arrested with the pop star.
He was arrested by Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies on the Sunset Strip after officers noticed him allegedly “burning rubber” and speeding.
The deputies claim to have then determined that the 25-year-old production assistant and rock band member was driving under the influence of alcohol. They then arrested him.
Aguilera, who was riding with Rutler, was arrested for public intoxication. She was described by officials as “very intoxicated,” according to the Los Angeles Times.
She was apparently released without criminal charges being filed, the paper stated in its report. Authorities said they don’t have plans to file charges against her over the incident.
However, a police spokesperson said the arrest will be noted on her record.
In fitting budding-celebrity style, Rutler faced a throng of reporters and photographers as he left the sheriff’s station in West Hollywood.
Rutler faces a wide variety of possible punishments if convicted of a first-offense DUI, including:
- Jail: up to six months
- A fine: up to $1,600
- A suspension of his driver’s license: up to six months
He could also be required to have an ignition interlock device installed in his vehicle, be ordered to complete a DUI program and receive a restricted license.
If convicted, he’s almost certain to also see his auto insurance rates rise.
